A Plea to Fellow Republicans — Stop Defending Sarah Palin

As a Republican, it pains my heart to watch the response to Sarah Palin’s latest gaffe. Like so many times before, Palin has put herself on the hot plate and shown that she does not know when to be quiet.

From the beginning, Republicans have squirmed through every public appearance she makes. From the 2008 debates to this current joke of a bus tour, Palin has shown she lacks the basic skills to handle pressure.This is not a good sign in a potential candidate for the Republican nomination for president. Why then, does Palin continue to get support from Republicans?

It continues…

 The Sad Defense of Sarah Palin’s Botched History

The latest situation with Palin messing up the history of Paul Revere is a perfect example. It is clear to anyone that saw the video that Palin had no clue what she was talking about.

Various Sarah Palin defenders have come out of the woodwork to defend her mangling of that most American of tales, the Midnight Ride of Paul Revere.

By E.D. KAIN

Listen Children and you will hear Sarah Palin has NO clue about the story of Paul Revere
The Midnight Ride of Paul Revere

 The crux of their defense is an obscure letter that Revere wrote in 1789 that has been preserved by the Massachusetts Historical Society.

Here’s the key bit:

I observed a Wood at a Small distance, & made for that. When I got there, out Started Six officers, on Horse back,and orderd me to dismount;-one of them, who appeared to have the command, examined me, where I came from,& what my Name Was? I told him. it was Revere, he asked if it was Paul? I told him yes He asked me if  I was an express? I answered in the afirmative. He demanded what time I left Boston? I told him; and  aded, that their troops had catched aground in passing the River, and that There would be five hundred Americans there in a short time, for I had alarmed the Country all the way up. He imediately rode towards those who stoppd us, when all five of them came down upon a full gallop; one of them, whom I afterwards found to be Major Mitchel, of the 5th Regiment, Clapped his pistol to my head, called me by name, & told me he was going to ask me some questions, & if I did not give him true answers, he would blow my brains out.

Setting aside the likelihood that this is a letter Palin has actually read, the fact still remains that the story of Paul Revere that Americans know and love is one of Revere riding across the countryside alerting the colonists that the redcoats were coming.

This is one of the key stories of the American Revolution, as much legend as history at this point. Nobody references Paul Revere being waylaid by British soldiers and warning them that the Americans were coming. If you answer a question about Paul Revere you talk about his ride, you recite Longfellow. You don’t babble incoherently about warning the British unless you happen to be a half-term former governor of Alaska who simply can’t be bothered to learn a little bit of American history.

I mean, surely Palin could have hired a few tutors between the 2008 debacle and now, right? Does she really honestly think she can just scrape by without spending any time off the publicity circuit? Maybe a course at Khan Academy, or a few hours in a library?

In any case, nobody needs yes men. At least no serious candidate. Maybe her supporters should stop defending her every foible and help her with her education instead.

It sure couldn’t hurt.

P.S. Just to clarify, my broader point is that Palin neither described the famous legend of Paul Revere as told in Longfellow’s poem, or the actual historical events. She mangled the facts (and mangled the syntax much more ferociously) and now her defenders are digging up an obscure story not even relevant to the history itself and holding it up as though Palin knew exactly what she was talking about. This is ludicrous.

    First here is the “gotcha” question, exact words;

    “What have you seen so far today, and what are you going to take away from your visit?”

    She wasn’t even asked about Paul Revere in the first place!!

    This is her reply, these are her EXACT words;
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    “He who warned, uh, the British that they weren’t going to be taking away our arms uh by ringing those bells and making sure as he’s riding his horse through town to send those warning shots and bells that we were going to be secure and we were going to be free and we were going to be armed.”
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    I challenge ANYONE to find anything historically correct in this statement, with the exception that he rode a horse.

    AND…..She could not even remember Paul Revere’s NAME!!;

    “He who warned, uh, the British”

    Pathetic!

    THEN she doubles down with this;

    “Part of his ride was to warn the British that were already there that ‘hey, you’re not going to take American arms, you are not going to beat our own well-armed persons individual private militia that we have.'”

    Palin further claimed ” I know my American history”.

    She doesn’t know “history” from a “hysterectomy”

    Keep in mind this is after she said THIS most recently about the Staue of Liberty;

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    “Lady Liberty is the symbol of unity and friendship we have with other freedom-loving nations. It’s also a “warning” of sorts, as France encouraged us to keep democracy alive as the recipient of this gift… basically telling us not to blow it. Thank you for this reminder, France!” she wrote on her SarahPAC.com website.
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

    AND …THIS last September;
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Sarah Palin appeared this weekend in Anchorage with her pal Glenn Beck. People waited in long lines to pay up to $225 for tickets, as the Anchorage Daily News reported. During the show, Palin said to the cheers of the crowd:
    “This Statue of Liberty was gifted to us by foreign leaders, really as a warning to us. It was a warning to us to stay unique and to stay exceptional from other countries. Certainly not to go down the path of other countries that adopted socialist policies,” Palin said to cheers from the crowd.”
    WHAT countries had “socialist policies” in 1870
      She’s an idiot…nothing more. And why people keep following her and paying her to make things up is beyond me. If she weighed 250 pounds and had gray hair, she would be home watching her grandkids. (oh wait, she can’t be bothered with children, can she?)
    I suspect that the tour guide mentioned that Paul Revere was caught by the British and tried to scare the small patrol into leaving the area. Sarah, more interested in signing autographs and the press than listening carefully just remembered a few words and mashed them together. The result had a few key words, and a totally different meaning.
      You are saying the first history about Paul Revere that Palin was exposed to was from a tour guide?
      She should KNOW this history…really, it seems most Americans from the third grade up do.
      Steve Schmidt , McCain’s campaign manager was correct, Sarah Palin dosen’t know anything.
    She is an idiot. I wish the Republicans like you Syrin and the leadership would get rid of her already. Enough is enough! The sick discourse in our country is at an all time high and I really blame her. It didn’t seem this bad before Sarah. I have always had friends from both sides and now people fight with each other. For example, yes, Wiener made a mistake, but do you see what the GOP is doing? They are literally trying to kill his entire career. They should work on their own vermin, just my opinion. Wiener was wrong, but for the GOP to expend so much energy on that? With all the problems we have as a country? Its just sad…..
    WakeUpAmerica — Right, every question is a “gotcha” question when you don’t “get” any of them.
    I have to question the author’s statement that “from the beginning, Republicans have squirmed through every public appearance she makes.” Does he mean to imply that all the people who cheered for Sarah Palin during the campaign and afterwards weren’t Republicans? If
    they were Democrats it would surprise the hell out of me.
    I finally finished both recently published books on the Queen Quitter and left feeling sorry for her. Of All her challenges before her she fails the most (in my opinion), in being so afraid of failing that she refuses to recognized her own failures.
      Do not feel sorry for Sarah Palin! Pray, if you’re a prayin woman.. As for everyone of us , we have a choice to make in our lives. What type of person we want to be, what are the significant priorities we are responsible for and how we want to live our lives. Most important is how we engage with other people.
      Sarah has chose the path of destruction that she is currently on for a precieved power that she craves (not Godly), worldly riches that she craves (not Godly) However, Godly aspects such as forgiveness and charity have never surfaced or have been part of Palin’s narrative.. Let’s just say.. GOD is not travelling with her on this wild ride!
    GOD makes HIS will very clear, if THE BIBLE is read.
    Matthew 7:16 “Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves. Ye shall know them by their fruits.
    Gal. 5:22-25. 22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self control
    1 Samuel 24:13 As the old saying goes, ‘From evildoers come evil deeds,’ so my hand will not touch you.
