And the press is wrong for making fun of her for her first references to Paul Revere “ringin’ those bells and makin’ sure he’s riding his horse through town to send those warning shots” when, of course, everyone knows he’d arranged to have lanterns hung to reveal the route of a British advance and then rode off (with a lot of others) to warn the Minutemen of the British advance.
National Rifle Association member that she is, Palin certainly knew Revere wasn’t firing off “warning shots.” There were no warning shots in the days of the single-shot, hard-to-reload musket. Nobody wasted shots, let alone ammunition, on warnings. They shot to try to hit something. Palin just slipped up there with her messaging, which is easy to understand because her problem has never been her history so much as her grammar and vocabulary.
English would appear to be a second or third language to Palin.
Alaska’s lamestream reporters covered for this failing for years. Had they been more honest about the gibberish speaker from Wasilla, she never would have gotten to where she is today. Now, thanks to their efforts to clean up her language, she is free to make confusing statements in front of the whole nation.
This is nothing new. Palin has always spoken some form of Wasillian, or even maybe Northeast Wasillian, an extremely rare dialect.
Reporters translated it for her, or cut her video snippets to seconds to try to make some sense of them.
No more. Today Palin has the luxury of speaking direct to the nation on video so she can say this of Paul Revere:
“He who warned the, the British that they weren’t gonna be takin’ away our arms by ringin’ those bells and makin’ sure he’s ridin’ his horse through town to send those warning shots and bells that we were gonna be secure and we were gonna be free.”
OK, let’s try to figure this out. Revere “warned…the British that they weren’t gonna be takin’ away our arms.” Why would the British need to be warned of that? They already knew they were facing resistance from armed Americans. That’s why the British were trying to disarm the Americans.
And they were going to do this, if you read Palin’s statement carefully, “by ringing those bells.” Or at least that appears to be what Palin is trying to say when she indicates the British aren’t “gonna be takin’ away our arms by ringin’ those bells.” And she’s right. It is unlikely the Minutemen would have put down their arms (actually, she means firearms, but arms is fine for the Twitter-world in which Palin dwells) because the English were ringing bells.
All of which brings us to that phrase about “makin’ sure he’s riding his horse through town.” What does that modify? “The British…weren’t gonna be taken away our arms by…makin’ sure he’s ridin’ his horse through town?” Chew on that for a while.
Imagine Revere “ridin’ his horse through town to send those warning shots and bells.” If Revere was sending bells and warning shots, you have to wonder how he was sending them. English mail? The U.S. Postal Service didn’t yet exist. And who was he sending the bells to? And what were the bells supposed to mean if one was sent to you?
Finally, at least, Palin does tack a simple, compound, declarative sentence on the end of her statement: “We were gonna be secure and we were gonna be free.” “We were gonna be secure.” “We were gonna be free.” This an English speaker can clearly understand.
There is only one problem. It would appear Palin does not know the meaning of the word secure. It means “free from danger or attack.”
Revere was not warning Americans they were going to be secure. He was warning them they were going to be attacked, which is the opposite of secure.
As for “gonna be free,” well, it is possible Palin understands the facts of history she memorized in school but lacks an understanding of how history moves through time. Revere wasn’t warning Americans they “were gonna be free.” He was warning them they were gonna have to fight if they wanted to be free, which they eventually did.
This led to the development of the world’s greatest democracy where Barack Obama — a black man from a failed marriage — truly proved that anyone can be president, and where Sarah Palin is now trying to show that you don’t even have to speak English “to ascertain that office,” as Palin might put it.

Ok, I’ll give this a try. Sarah followed the guide and sort of listened to his lecture because she was more interested in the press and signing autographs. A reporter asked her a gottcha question about what she had done that day and what she had taken away from that. Sarah, tried to remember what the guide had said. Some words: British, Paul Revere, bells, guns, horse, British take away arms, Revere warning the British, all are part of the story, and she remembered them. So she jammed them together is random order and called it an answer. When asked if she messed up, instead of laughing and admitting she wasn’t really paying attention, she doubled down by adding details that made the story even further from the original. Sarah may know HER American History, but she sure doesn’t know what the rest of us call American History.

Then she was asked what she learned today. Not having learned anything, she answered this “gotcha question” by recalling a childrens book she read to Piper one night that was related to Paul Revere. The book is titled: John, Paul, George, and Ben (this is for real folks), which featured a Paul Revere who rang bells in a tower.
It’s as good an explanation as any when you’re dealing with a total airhead.

I have to agree that her broken English (I don’t think it’s a Wasilla dialect. It’s all Palin) and her stream of conscious sentences are far more troubling than her lack of history knowledge. She misuses words frequently, even making them up. There is no structure to her sentences (if you can even call them sentences). She appears to have difficulty putting her thoughts to words or perhaps her thoughts are streaming so fast that she only ends up linking a bunch of ideas together in a garbled mess. I’ve also thought that she tries to throw out as much info as possible with each statement in hopes of getting something right. Journalists will edit and focus only on the pieces that make some sort of sense. When you see a transcript of her words, it is very difficult to follow and quite disturbing.
She is constantly having to clarify her words and statements. It is of the utmost importance that any statements made by the President are clear and concise. Imagine the difficulties we could have around the world if her words were misunderstood. In certain situations she could easily insult world leaders or cause other conflicts. It would be a nightmare.

Paul Revere wasn’t warning “the Americans” about anything. At the time of the Revolutionary War, those living in America were British subjects. This exposes another gap in Palin’s understanding of U.S. history. This region did not become the United States of America until after at least 9 of the 13 states had ratified the Constitution. George Washington became our first president in March of 1789. North Carolina and Rhode Island were the only states that had not voted to ratify the Constitution at that time.

It was a funny response. These people aren’t God. They are both politicians, and both deserve the laughs that they generate. I’m a conservative. I have a G.E.D and would know better than to give a speech that will be covered on national news without knowing what the hell I was going to say. Make some notes, people. Practice your speech, practice your responses. Think before you open your mouth.
Sweeper salesmen do better presentations than these people. But apparently, politicians have sold the American people on turning on one another instead of collectively turning on the trouble makers and incompetents.
