Top Sports News of 2011: Glen Rice and Sarah Palin

Glen Rice and Sarah Palin :: AP

As 2011 winds down, it’s time to look back at the year’s biggest sports stories. Some may remember 2011 as the year of the NBA and NFL lockouts, or the year the Cardinals came from nowhere to win the World Series. Hockey fans may look at 2011 as the year the Bruins finally captured another Stanley Cup. Those who love records may look fondly on Saints quarterback Drew Brees breaking Dan Marino’s passing record or Mike Krzyzewski reaching the all-time wins record in college hoops. For me, however, nothing topped the revelation that Sarah Palin and Glen Rice allegedly had a one-night stand in 1987. The alleged tryst took place in the dorm room of Palin’s younger sister while Rice, a junior at Michigan, was in town for the Great Alaska Shootout. Here’s a look back at some other notable pop culture and sports moments of the year.

Don’t forget that Ms. Palin was at least 3-4 years older than Mr. Rice, who may have been either a teenager or barely out of his teens, and Ms. Palin was a “professional” sportscaster who violated the code of ethics for her profession.

This is the funniest sports related story of all time in Wasilla, Palmer, Dillingham, Juneau, Anchorage, Bristol Bay, Homer, etc….

I would bet this was not a one-night stand if the truth were known. If Molly McCann wants to make a bundle, my guess she has the truth to many of the Sarah stories. Hope Sarah is paying her well to keep her quiet.

We didn’t have dorm rooms in 1987 – so, at what sleazy hotel did they do the deed? Or maybe it was just sister’s college apartment, in which case it could have gone on for the whole shootout.

Okay, I might be wrong about the timeframe that the family apartments UAA acquired became student housing, but I attended as an undergraduate 1984-1989, and as I recall, that housing was not available during those years; when it became available, it was a pricy option compared to having my own apartment.

Welcome Bretta! Thanks for your comments! All that was available back in 1987 was the Main Apartment Complex (MAC), completed in 1984.. NOT DORMS
Three co-educational residence halls (North, West, and East Halls), completed in 1998.

UAA is a Division II member of the Great Northwest Athletic Conference
Great Alaska Shootout is an annual college basketball tournament in Anchorage, Alaska that features colleges from all over the United States. The University of Alaska Anchorage hosts the tournament every Thanksgiving. If you’re the lucky athlete, a pretend ( community channel NOT a major station) sportscaster will be very friendly with you!
