Palin Disputes Allegations of Federal Investigation, Threatens Alaskan Journalist, Mainstream Media Outlets With Defamation Suits
LA Times also rebuts 'rumored FBI investigation into…public corruption charges'

Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin marked the Independence Day holiday by firing back at "false and defamatory allegations" made over the past twenty-four hours; noting limits on the "right of free speech"; and issuing threats of potential legal action against a number of journalists and media outlets.

Through her private attorney, Thomas Van Flein, Palin issued a statement on Saturday in response to stories concerning suggestions of a federal investigation into the contracting and building of her house on Lake Lucille in Wasilla and the Wasilla Sports Complex, both constructed during her tenure as Mayor of the small town.

The four page response [posted in full at the end of this article] rebuts allegations as discussed on this blog and other news sites on Friday following the former Republican Vice Presidential nominee's surprise announcement that she would be resigning from office with a year and a half still remaining in her first term as Governor.

The defiant statement includes a warning "to provide notice" to journalists and media outlets that she "will be exploring legal options this week to address such defamation."

The statement opens by charging that following her stunning, and often beguiling, hastily called press conference at the beginning of the holiday weekend, "several unscrupulous people have asserted false and defamatory allegations that the 'real' reasons for Governor Palin's resignation stem from an alleged criminal investigation pertaining to the construction of the Wasilla Sports Complex."

Also, late tonight, the Los Angeles Times has filed a short article featuring a response from an FBI spokesperson in Alaska who denies that the agency is investigating the Palins on those matters…

* * *

The Van Flein/Palin statement describes allegations of impropriety and possible indictments as a "canard … first floated by Democrat operatives in September 2008 during the national campaign and followed up by sympathetic Democratic writers." The attorney describes the charges as "one of many fabrications about Sarah Palin."

"The Sports Complex was built in 2002. It is now 2009," Van Flein writes on Palin's behalf. "While the Federal Government has a process to follow, and that process sometimes takes time, we can categorically state that we are not aware of any 'federal investigation' that has been 'pending' for the last seven years. We are aware of no subpoenas on SBS [Spenard Builders Supply] regarding the Palins."

The statement makes liberal use of direct quotes, such as "federal investigation" and "pending", as seen in the above, but fails to attribute them to anybody in particular. The comment about SBS subpoenas would seem to be in reply to a report at The Daily Beast on Friday by Max Blumenthal (which we linked to and quoted in a late update to our own coverage) asking "Did a Scandal Sink the U.S.S. Palin?" Blumenthal, however, is not named directly in the letter, nor is Daily Beast, nor did he use the word "pending"

Though the words "fact" and "under federal investigation" are quoted directly, Van Flein does not cite the sources of those quotations.

Moore briefly spoke on Saturday night, she was preparing to host her radio show within minutes, on which, she said, she would likely be discussing Palin's statement. At the same time we were preparing to head out for family festivities for the evening, in celebration of the Independence Day holiday. In our brief conversation, truncated due to both commitments, she expressed concerns about attempts at censorship and intimidation against journalists by a public official, as read in Palin's response. No doubt, if she hasn't already, she will be replying to Palin's statement herself directly, in some form, in the days ahead.

Freedom of speech is an inherent right we have in this country since the 1st amendment was ratified by the states. The right to free speech must not violate others rights but we have the right to our opinion. We also have the right to express it to anyone who will listen but we do not have the right to force our opinion on others.
The words in the 1st Amendment are stated below:

“Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.”

What a pathetic display as always by Sarah 'whack job' 'lame duck' Palin of anti freedom, anti American, and some of you cheer. Palin's unethical behavior and mental illness runs deep and is documented. Freedom of speech belongs to everyone whether it's truth or not. Even if you don't like what is being said about you? She's been investigated before and found guilty. She than lied and said she was innocent and mentioned slander and defirmation of character. Can she sue really allthe media outlets that she disagrees with? I think not.. She is and has been a public figure, therefore open to criticism and ridicule. Besides, she has no moral character, how can it be defamed.
Everyone from Britney Spears to Obama and many present politians have been defamed a time or two. She can not rise above the fray, because she's a belly crawler, she's petty, crass and clueless, vindictive and dishonest 'also' 'too'. There's more to the story.

Slander is not an opinion, nor a right. Law specifically differentiates between the two. Other people have been defamed by the press, yes. They've sued, and they've won. Because it's against the law.She may not be able to do anything someone's opinion that she is corrupt, without morals, the worst politician evar, because that is opinion. However, to accuse her of having committed a crime, without the factual backing to prove it? Yeah, that's slander. It's against the law. A civil infraction, and in some cases a criminal act.

The story here should be Sarah whack job Palin again trying to squash freedom of speech. Been there done that. Listen up fools most said about those pesky politicans is without the factual backing, thats the way politics works! Pick up Palin's peices and go home.. SHE IS THE CRIME…. A crime, civil infraction, whatever, I'm sure something will be found……
President Bush endured slanderous statements for 8 years. Not once did he get a personal lawyer?!? on it and threaten to sue his detractors. That would be petty and giving creedence.
Bush Whacked The Slander of President Bush for WAR CRIMES, killing of the innocent, embellzzalment and on and on. Yea, lets take this to its real place of interest. Is this what you people want for our country? Calling politicians "liars" illegal in France A woman accused of "public slander against a government member" has been summoned. This summons is another evidence of France's "easy slide into fascism". Sarah whore that rides the beast Palin is a slimball, certainly corrupt and has plenty to hide. However, she is held up as a victim who has been defamed, lied about? She is a public spectical, a ET regular, her worshippers are anti American, lawless sycophants. Shamful that people like you are hoping for fascism to reign in America.

Bush didn't just put up with it, Bush did the exact same thing back, and a nasty job of it to boot.As far as the rest goes, I've made it clear that there is a difference between slander and opinion. When you cross that line, you are every bit the filth that you accuse her of being.Realize that because I disagree with you… doesn't mean that I agree with her. To paraphrase an old adage, the enemy of your enemy is not your friend. Hating Palin doesn't make you a liberal, does it? Of course not! Think that slander is bad, that people who believe it is okay doesn't mean that I believe Palin is good. She's clearly out of her league, and doesn't belong in national politics. She's treating it like a publicity stunt. What's shameful is the behaviour of people like YOU… and I don't mean "conservatives", I mean both you conservatives and liberals that act like angry children when you don't get your way, namecalling (sarah the whore? What the hell?), that insist on demonizing anyone that dares to oppose you.Oh no, we can't simply disagree with you, we MUST be fascists, unamerican, unpatriotic, socialists, marxists, babykillers, choicestealers, hate criminals, racists, nazis, the list goes on.Conservatives like you and liberals like that are one of the main things wrong with this country's politics.

The US Attorney's Office for Alaska, a Federal agency, COULD BE investigating her. US Attorney's are part of the DEPT. of Justice, they are NOT the FBI.

Ignorant individuals like you with a false moral outrage. You're sick, wait, I'm sick of trying to figure out what your understanding of freedom is! Not constitution, not conservative' justice for all. Not, I'll defend the right for my enemies to speak, because that inturn gives me the right. You worthless defender of the corrupt and evil is what is killing my country and party. Oh no, we can't simply disagree with me, we MUST call me a fascists, unamerican, unpatriotic, socialists, marxists, babykillers, choicestealers, hate criminals, racists, nazis, the list goes on. Interesting, isn't it? There are several more RUMORS going around.
Such as: Palin was found guilty of abuse and misconduct for wrong doing with her 'Legal Defense Fund" (WHY DOES SOMEONE ETHICAL NEED A LEGAL DEFENSE FUND?) millons of dollars are said to be un accounted for RUMORED embezzlement- Sarah Pac sponsored?… She was given an ultimatum (I think this is highly improper, possibly unlawful) by her appointed 3 member personnal board that she, if continues to be the Gov the TRUTH of the matter would have to come out and the whole mess and paper trail would have to be released to the public. However, it's RUMORED if she RESIGNS she was told by that appointed 3 member board that determines ETHICAL matters in the State of Alaska that she can essentially TAKE THE MONEY AND RUN!!!!!!!!!!!

    Just a RUMOR

The mistake you are making here is your repeated and ridiculous assumption that I am DEFENDING anyone. I am attacking your repeated and ignorant assertions that slander is covered by freedom of speech. Do remember that I never accused Moore of slander… that is for the courts to decide when Palin gets her little snit going in a court of law. You are suggesting that someone can tell any lie and that this is perfectly okay. This is wrong, and more so for someone who repeatedly flies into indignant rages over the moral failings of others, hypocritical to boot.Fear not, I'm not killing your party. I refuse to be part of the embarassment that are the Republican and Democratic parties. As for this country, unlike that pair of failures, I have no effect on it. Guess who's really killing it? By the way, I do have my own blog, thanks, and like you, I respond to the comments in them. High concept, fer shoor!
